STUDY OF THE WEEK — Gratitude

Researchers wanted to see if daily feelings of gratitude could be a buffer against the negative consequences of COVID-19.

This study asked participants to complete an online daily questionnaire which included questions about their daily subjective health, their feelings, and daily stress related to COVID-19.

The findings showed that feeling more gratitude than usual was associated with more positive emotions and better subjective health.

Feeling more gratitude was also associated with less stress related to the pandemic. Read the full study, here.

Some thoughts: According to research conducted by the National Science Foundation, we have around 50,000 thoughts daily. Of this, 80% of our thoughts are negative.

Negative. 80%.

The major areas of negativity:

  1. Regrets of the past
  2. Fear of the future
  3. Unhealthy comparisons (hello, social media)
  4. Blame (self or others)

Our minds are wired to be negative so we can protect our bodies to survive another day. It’s likely why we remember negative things easily and forget a lot of the positive. If we understand the 80% and we know with countless studies that choosing to feel grateful brings us health and wellness, it’s time to fight the 80%.

When you feel negativity, change it with positivity. Make it stick, even if you have to fake it until you make it.

Practice makes perfect, after all.

Be grateful. Challenge your negative thoughts. Do it for your well-being.
