Microblog: Vitamin C on a Meat-Based Diet

Microblog: Vitamin C on a Meat-Based Diet

Adapted from @CarnivoreCure: Let’s settle the question about vitamin C on a meat-based diet once and for all.

1️⃣ FEAR OF SCURVY
A minimum of 10 mg of vitamin C seems to stave off scurvy. But the story of the sailors with scurvy fails to talk about the fact that HALF the men on the boat DID NOT get scurvy—even though they were on the same exact diet.

2️⃣ QUESTIONABLE RDA VALUES
1974: the RDA for men is 45 mg.
1989: the RDA for men is 60 mg.
2000: the RDA for men is 90 mg.

WHY?

⁉️Sure, science is a thing. But did we really progress and learn that we need DOUBLE the amount in just 26 years? It’s been 21 years, are we due for another uptick?

3️⃣ GOLD STANDARD BREASTMILK
We design our amino acid requirements for proteins around the makeup of breastmilk.
The daily RDA for 0-6 months of vitamin C is 40 mg.
7-12 months is 50 mg.

🤱🏻Breastmilk will MAYBE have half that amount. Should we stop exclusively breastfeeding because it’s not making the vitamin C cut? (Please don’t.)

I have yet to hear of babies with scurvy. Anyone?

4️⃣ ANTIOXIDANTS
Anything in excess isn’t good. Look up prooxidants. Yes, antioxidants can be in excess and cause MORE oxidation in the body.

‼️And excess vitamin C can feed MORE of the oxalate pathway.

🦪Get antioxidants from salmon, oysters and AA carnosine.

5️⃣ TWO TYPES OF VITAMIN C
One is transported through glucose transporters. Red blood cells use these transporters for vitamin C—but so does glucose uptake.

📖In @CarnivoreCure I talk about how corn subsidies made high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)-rise to notoriety.
In 1984, Coke shift all sodas from sugar to HFCS.
Mid-1990’s GMO corn starts appearing.

🚨The timing eerily lines up with the increase of Vitamin C requirements.

⁉️Is an increase of Vitamin C a band-aid because of too much consumption of glucose-friendly carbs? What if we stop the excess sugar?

6️⃣ VITAMIN C-RICH BEEF SPLEEN
If you’re still worried about the 90 mg vitamin C requirement, eat 200 grams of beef spleen and you’ll hit 91 mg. So eat a tad less than 200 g.
